Guitar Lessons


 

Our guitar program is divided into three phases in order to best meet the needs of individual students who are at varying levels of expertise.


Phase 1

This course is for those who wish to develop expertise in the area of chord playing.  Upon completion, the student is able to function comfortably as a rhythm guitar player in most bands.  Some detail is given to basic music theory.  Although not required, provision is made for the student to play in a small band.

Some of the things covered include:

  • How to tune the guitar
  • Care and maintenance of the guitar

  • Time signatures

  • Key signatures

  • Open chords

  • Bar chords

  • Various strumming patterns

  • Various finger picking patterns

  • Alternating basses

  • Transposing

  • Use of the capo

  • Playing by ear

  • Improvising


Phase 2

This course is for those who wish to develop expertise in the area of note reading.

Some of the things covered include:

  • How to tune the guitar

  • Reading notes on the treble clef

  • Time signatures

  • Key signatures

  • Rest notes

  • Major and minor scales

  • Tempo

  • Dynamics

  • Chromatics

  • Chords

  • Alternating bass notes

  • Bass runs


Phase 3

This course applies principles from both phases 1 & 2 in order to help the student to achieve their goals in the area of "flatpicking".

Some of the things covered include:

  • Basic bluegrass strumming patterns

  • Bass runs and walks, hammer-ons and pull-offs

  • How to read tablature

  • Picking lead

  • Crosspicking

  • Practice techniques

  • And much more
